about

BEHIND THE ALBUM

This album was recorded on the 18th of January 2018.  It was a cold winter’s morning and I had been told it was usual to record four or five tracks in a day. I had eleven to record, so I knew I was up against it! The previous month I had been increasing my playing stamina incrementally, so that I would be able to make the most of this seven hour recording window.

I turned up at the studio in Hackney at 10 am, a tall old building, stylishly decorated in artwork by a professional graffiti artist. It had that “cool” east London look. In the studio was a Steinway B grand piano and a tempting spread of fruit bars and coffee  laid out by Lucinda, sound engineer and owner of ‘Last Eight’. With four microphones now in place (two above the strings, one at the back of the room and one under the piano) we started the sound checks, and the session began.

Scores of the eleven pieces (printed in this book) were in front of me, and although I had memorised them, it was a great comfort to have them there. It had taken a little over a year to compose all the pieces, often working on two or three at the same time. It was a frenzy of creativity. Every time I’d get on a piano I would be playing one piece or another, trying out new ways of arranging notes, dynamics, rhythms…

I knew I had to get them all recorded in that one session, it was a case of whatever I recorded made it onto the album, there was no way round it. It took me a while to calm  my nerves down, and  it is always frustrating to have to  play a section over and over again until it is right. However, we managed to stop and have an hour’s lunch break - I went for a walk by the canal, which had some developments appearing further upstream (now a mix of old and new) and found a vegan cafe  recommended by Lucinda. When I got back to the studio it was all systems go - we finished shortly after 6, just as the cleaners were starting up. I could have kept going long into the night. But a session is a session; a deal is a deal. We had what we needed - and it was time to let it go.
